Austria is an interesting case study in the context of the continuing difficulties the EU faces and the wide disparities between the Member States in terms of recent trends and current situation. Some years after the peak of the financial and economic crisis, Austria’s socio-economic position is very strong in international terms, its economic performance and competitiveness are good, welfare standards are high, the job market is vigorous and combines flexibility with security, the welfare system is well-developed and inclusive, employment is high and unemployment relatively low which is reflected in the relatively equitable income distribution and low at-risk-of-poverty rate.
Moreover, The country is faced with important environmental pressures arising from urban sprawl and the rapid expansion of road transportation. Demographic changes also pose a challenge to Austria’s impressive work-life balance achievements. Even though important reforms are already underway, the aging of Austria’s population could undermine its fiscal sustainability. In addition, the unemployment rate of migrants from non-EU countries is double the unemployment rate of Austrians.
Over the longer term, Austria has benefited from above-average growth, which can be attributed in part to its efficient institutions and ability to adapt to changing conditions and in part to the positive impact of EU eastern enlargement and the country’s geographical location in a strong and dynamic economic region.
